You must have taken inspiration from a lot of different places and people. Finally decided to shoot the shot, quite literally and picked up your phone whenever you felt inspired and started clicking. You soon must have realized that the photos you took are not quite up to the mark and thus started looking up on the internet, the ways to make your photography skills better. You must have found articles filled with a lot of technical camera terms and in the end, you understood nothing. Fear not, we have listed a few terms here that might help you understand how to take better photos.

Let’s get into the ones which are very basic and are found in the expert or manual mode of the default camera in any phone.

ISO:

ISO basically means the sensitivity of the camera towards the light. ISO for a mobile camera ranges from 100 to 3200. The lower the number of ISO, the lower is its sensitivity towards light. At 100 ISO, you can click in daylight but in the nighttime when higher sensitivity of light is required, a higher number of ISO is used.

Shutter Speed:

Shutter speed is the speed at which the shutter of the camera closes and opens for the light to enter.  It ranges from 1/8000s to 16s for mobile cameras. A higher shutter speed means a larger amount of light to enter the camera. If an object while shooting when the shutter is open, moves from its place, then the object appears to be a blur in the final photo.

White Balance:

White balance is used to achieve the white colour in photographs to be exact as the white colour in real life. White balance ranges from 2000k to 8000k for a mobile device. Many times the amount of white balance is changed or experimented with within a photo filter to produce certain effects such as yellowish-white or bluish-white aesthetics in images.

Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF):

Auto Focus is a feature that measures the distance of an object in focus, the depth of the object and its sharpness. You can change focus through manual focus. Manual focus ranges from 0.00 to 1.00 for a mobile camera.

Exposure Value (EV):

Exposure means how dark or bright a picture is. Exposure value helps control the light in the image furthermore, it ranges from -2.00 to +2.00 for a mobile camera.

These were the terms and also, the functions for any mobile camera. Use the features to control the amount of light, its sensitivity, focus and white balance. Even if you are using these functions, remember to not go only in technicalities but also follow your instinct. You can change the dominance of a certain colour using a photo editing app. Remember to use a tripod when using high shutter speed for a clear image. In the end, understand all these functions well and use them to take your desired photo.
